I got the itch to bake something last weekend. Dexter and Dewey were the lucky recipients of the fruits of my labor! I whipped up some homemade dog biscuits that are low fat, chewy, and puppy-approved.
- 1 banana, ripe
- 1 cup shredded carrot
- ¼ cup unsweetened apple sauce
- ⅛ cup water
- 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup oats
- Preheat your oven to 350F.
- Mash the carrots with the banana, then add applesauce and water.
- Fold in the oats and gradually add the flour until a dough is formed.
- Lightly sprinkle a counter top with some whole wheat flour and roll out the dough to about ½ inch thick.
- Use a small biscuit cutter (or any cutter of your choice!) and place treats on a lightly-sprayed cookie sheet.
- Bake for 25 minutes, and then turn off the oven and let the treats stay inside for an additional 2-3 hours. This will dehydrate them further, creating a chewy (or crunchy, depending on how long you let them dehydrate) treat with a longer shelf life!
Dexter knew the treat was for him. He just KNEW it.
What happens when Dexter declares that something belongs to him?
C’mon, all together now..
GREMLIN FACE!
Salivating uncontrollably while mommy tries to take photos of the finished treats.
That’s when Dewey came on scene and pulled out… The Eyebrows. Oh I was in trouble. Those treats were not going to be long for this world.
Could YOU say no to that face?
That’s what I thought.
They went nuts over these things. I bet I could get them to do anything I asked if they thought their reward would be a little disc of apple-banana awesomeness.
.. and I would do anything for him when he looks at me like this!
Dexter wanted me to tell you all that I left out a step in the instructions above. This photo illustrates a very, very important part of this recipe. Feed to doggeh.

Erin, these dog biscuits are so cute and I bet any dog – especially Dexter – would be lucky to enjoy them! Thanks for sharing. You have a very nice blog and I’m so glad to have found you!
Thank you for your kind words!
OMG these photos of your dogs are so beautiful!!!! I am glad they njoyed the treats!
Thanks, Catalina! They’re such rascals!
Came across one of your comments on The Pioneer Woman and something made me checkout your link. As soon as I saw your Corgi favicon I knew I had to come visit! We have 2, an almost 7-yr-old we’ve had since a pup and an almost 4-yr-old we adopted from another family last September. We haven’t made homemade treats in a very long time, my daughter has been after me to do it…so we’ll have to try these after our next trip to the grocery – I’m sure our Riley & Duncan will LOVE them!
Welcome fellow corgi lover!! I love the names Riley & Duncan – so very fitting!
Found this on Pinterest and I just had to say WHAT CUUUUUTE DOGS YOU HAVE! They’re killin me and no I certainly could NOT say no to EITHER face. I’m going to try these on my own fur baby and see what she thinks. So far all her treats have been pb-centric so this will be different. (P.S. Are your dogs Corgi’s?)
Aw, thank you!! They are corgis!
I have seen so many dog treat recipes, but none of them use typical ingredients or sound as good as these. I can’t wait to make them for my puppies! Thanks!
Let me know how they work out! Thanks for visiting.
my pup would love me if i made these! you got SUCH great photos haha! so cute.
Thank you so much!
Hi! I love your dogs! I’m a huge, huge fan of Pembrokes- so cute! Anyway, and please take no offense, but did you try these, becasue honestly, they look qutie tasty to me as a better-for-you/healthy cookie option.
Ha! It’s funny you ask that.. we actually DID try a little bite. Let’s just say they could use some sweetening up.. but all in all? Not too horrible!
Cute! These are two lucky pups!
thank you so much for sharing this recipe. our ‘neighborhood dog’ absolutely loves these cookies. i find i rather enjoy them too, lol!
Just made these with my sister – her 6 dogs LOVE LOVE LOVED them! No doubt my 4 guys will be equally as appreciative when I take some home (if I can keep these guy’s paws off them long enuf!)…
Many thanks! This is one of the only really tasty and low fat, low calorie dog treats I’ve found online! All our dogs salute you – they give you 6 WOOFS!
Oh my goodness, these sound extraordinarily good! Going to try them next saturday, the treatbaking day
Love the photos on your site, so delicious!
Cant wait to make these! How many did you get out of why looks like a 1″ cookie cutter?
We’re Corgis too! Bookmarked this on mom’s ibone for her to make us today! We have all the ingredients — Can’t wait
Our Momma made these for us today! Dexter and Dewey are right, these things are WONDERFUL!! Thanks for giving our Mom the recipe!!
Hi, may I know the cup measurements in grams? It will be much clearer because the cup that we use may differ. And can I use plain flour instead of wheat flour? Because I found out that some dogsay be allergic to wheat. Thank you for the recipe and your dogs seemed to enjoy the cookies. I am going to try to make some for my dog as well.
Thanks so much for the recipe, but maybe I am missing something, but is the oatmeal cooked or dry? Can’t wait to try the recipe, sounds like I might enjoy it also – being vegan and all! Thanks.
