Here’s a few of my favorite food news stories from this week!
1. Caffeinated Bagels
Einstein Bros Bagels announced a new line-up of “boosted bagels” this week, each one “jam-packed with flavor and benefits”. Among the offerings is the Espresso Buzz Bagel, which has 32mg of caffeine, roughly the same amount found in a 12oz can of soda. Though I haven’t tried it myself, the name, color, and the fact that it was photographed with coffee beans tells me that it is also coffee-flavored. Perhaps targeted at those who like to chew their coffee as well as drink it? The bagel also comes in a sandwich version with bacon, eggs, cheddar, and butter. If does, in fact, taste like coffee, that combination sounds bizarre to me. If I end up trying this (because c’mon, I love me some bagels) I will stick to a simple smear of cream cheese.
2. Cocktail-Inspired Doughnuts

If caffeine in your bagels doesn’t do it for you, how about booze in your doughnuts? The Doughnut Project in NYC is in the midst of their “Cocktail Series” – a line-up of doughnut flavors inspired by cocktails from around the city. Pictured above is a doughnut filled with banana liqueur cream topped with pineapple meringue, inspired by the Everlasting Arms cocktail at The Bennett in NYC.
3. The Mermaid Frappuccino
Step aside #unicornfrappuccino, meet the #mermaidfrappuccino ?? @baycitystarbucks sold out of the unicorn frappuccino on the first day, but we made the moment right by suggesting other partner created frappuccinos! The mermaid frappuccino is a Pokémon go frappuccino without raspberry syrup, drizzled with a toasted coconut matcha sauce! I’ll post the recipe in the comments ??? #tobeapartner #tobeamermaid #toolegitarea31 #starbucks #starbuckssecretmenu #frappuccino #happyhour #canigetasipsip #greenstraw #lovewhatyoudo @starbuckspartners @buzzfeed @frappuccino @amazon_barista #dragonfrappuccino @popsugarfood
Following the craziness of the Unicorn Frappuccino, I give you this similar sweet indulgence – The Mermaid Frappuccino. While not an official menu item, @themodernbarista came up with the drink recipe – a slight alteration from the Pokemon Go Frappuccino of last year – which has since gone viral and earned itself a spot on the Starbucks unofficial “Secret Menu” If you want to order one for yourself, here’s what you’ll need to say (this recipe is specifically for the Grande size): a vanilla bean creme frappuccino base blended with 3 scoops of blackberries, topped with a drizzle made with 8 pumps of white mocha sauce, 3 pumps of toasted coconut syrup, and 3 scoops of matcha powder. If you ask really nicely and if your barista isn’t already going crazy from the special orders, you can ask that the drizzle be swirled in the bottom and up the sides of the cup before adding the frappuccino mixture. If not, drizzled on top is fine, or you can ask for a sprinkle of matcha on top. Then be sure to be extra nice to your barista and leave him/her a tidy tip!
