Mint Chocolate Chunk Quest Bar Review

June 3, 2015 by Erin 7 Comments

There’s a brand new Quest Bar flavor on the block.  It’s chocolatey, it’s minty, it’s Quest bar-y, it’s Mint Chocolate Chunk!  Available since April 2015, this newest breed of Quest bar is the 18th flavor in their arsenal.  The majority of protein bar brands have some kind of mint chocolate variety and as big-time fans of “Questies” we were so excited to hear that the minty-fudge combo has made its way to their line-up of nutrition bars.

There’s not many of negative comments you can make about Quest bars.  There are so many flavors that everyone can find one (or many!) that they like.  Of my favorite varieties there are no weird aftertastes or chewy “protein bar” textures.   Quest is also known for their big “chunks” of flavor – chocolate, fruit, nuts, etc – that add some textural interest.

The killer taste and texture aren’t the only things that make Quest bars so popular – they also deliver an impressive nutritional profile.  A whopping 20grams of protein and only 4 net carbs that come from nuts, not sugar! The ingredient list is also friendly and free of junk.

The new Mint Chocolate Chunk bars don’t disappoint in appearance.  It’s a fudgy chocolate bar with big ole pale green chunks of minty goodness.  It’s easy to hold and doesn’t crumble or melt all over your hands.  I took a whiff and received an aroma made up of mostly bittersweet chocolate with a pleasant hint of peppermint dancing around in the background.

But there aren’t only mint chunks, oh no, this puppy is also loaded up with big ole chocolate cookie chunks as well.

If you are familiar with chocolate Quest bars then you will not be disappointed with Mint Chocolate Chunk – the chocolate base has a strong not-to-sweet chocolately flavor with a great brownie texture, not too chewy and not too messy.  I made sure to get a nibble of one of the mint chunks by themselves and was delighted that while the mint flavor is present, it’s not overwhelmingly… minty, ya know what I mean?  Sometimes “mint chocolate” flavors get dangerously close to breath mint or toothpaste territory, but Quest made a wise decision to keep the peppermint flavor on the mild side.

The balance of flavors just works for me.  So good.

I broke open a piece to get a better glimpse of the inside.  There’s a generous amount of chocolate cookie chunks, almost a 1:1 ratio in the bar I tried for this review.  I appreciate that these bars keep me full during that long stretch between lunch and dinner but they don’t weigh me down or cause me to feel sluggish.  They’re also the perfect pick-me-up if I need a pre-workout boost of energy, because I’m certainly not getting my energy from sleep these days with a fussy 7-month old baby!

Overall, I think this is an impressive addition to the Quest bar family and one that we’ll buy again along with our other favorite flavors.  Order your own box of Mint Chocolate Chunk  and tell me what you think!

Oh, and before I go – did you all know that baking/broiling Quest bars in the oven is a thing?  Yeah, it’s a thing, and though I haven’t tried it yet, it’s apparently pretty amazing.  Here’s how to do it – maybe I’ll give it a try with Mint Chocolate Chunk and post the results on my instagram account (@ebrowniebites)?

How to Bake a Quest Bar:  Place the unwrapped bar on a piece of foil sprayed lightly with cooking spray, or on a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet.  Bake in a 350F oven for 5-8 minutes or until slightly melty and golden brown.  If your bar is chocolate it will be difficult to judge done-ness by color, so poke it with your finger (careful, it’ll be hot!) and when it’s warm and soft, it’s done.

I received a box of Mint Chocolate Chunk Quest bars for the purpose of this review.  I do not accept free product or compensation in return for a fully positive review.  Remember my motto: if it sucks, I’ll tell ya!

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your
site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to
say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect
with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?
