Beauty products, household cleaners, and diapers, oh my! This assortment of goodies gets both my inner mommy and girly-girl excited. I’m sure you’ve heard of The Honest Company since they are all the rage right now. I’d ogled over their diapers and heard great things about the eco-friendly and body-safe ingredients that they use in their products, but up until now I’ve never tried them for myself.
You can purchase their products individually a la carte from their website or a local retailer, but they also offer a monthly subscription service for bundles of their products where you can save up to 40% off of the individual prices. That’s convenient for things like diapers and wipes or infant formula that need to be restocked frequently, but they also offer bundles of their personal care and household products as well.
Also, stay tuned to the bottom of this post for an exclusive $10 off a $25 purchase deal for all first-time customers. But for now, let’s try some of this stuff.
I’ll be honest (haha, see what I did there?) I had no idea that The Honest Company has an extensive line of bath/body and household products that are appropriate for the whole family to use. I was already aware of their popular (and adorable) diapers and wipes, but when I actually took the time to browse their website I was shocked at all of the cool stuff that’s available! I was stoked to try out this fun sampler of travel-size versions of some of their other products. Here’s what I thought:
Organic Healing Balm – the description says that this balm is a “nourishing ointment for dry, irritated, or sensitive skin”. After doing a little research I also found out that it’s widely used as a diaper rash treatment and preventative as well. Thankfully, Jasper does not have sensitive skin and we have avoided any kind of diaper rash thus far. My hands, on the other hand, have been taking a beating from a winter of dry air and constant hand-washing from all of the diaper changes. I decided to try applying this balm in place of a regular lotion after washing my hands. The cream itself is thick and a little goes a long way. I found the balm to be more soothing than lotion and made a noticeable difference in the painful cracked areas on my fingers and hands. There is no “medicine smell” that I could detect and it did not leave behind a greasy residue. If Jasper ever does develop a diaper rash, I’m definitely going to use this balm!
Honest Hand Soap, Lavender – first and foremost I have to mention the smell of this soap, because it is amazing. It made my whole bathroom smell like fresh lavender, mmm! I mentioned earlier that my hands are suffering from the constant post-diaper-changing hand washing, but I didn’t notice this soap contributing to any extra dryness. Sometimes with other brands of hand soap I feel like the moisture has been leeched from my skin immediately after drying my hands, but my skin felt neutral when using Honest Hand Soap. I’m going to have to place an order for the full size bottles (and try the other scents like lemongrass and mandarin!) very soon, because I’m going to empty out this little bottle faster than you can say hokey pokey!
Honest Face + Body Lotion – I’ve noticed that Jasper develops dry skin on his lower legs, particular after bathtime. I’ve no doubt the indoor heating and dry air from the cold months are also contributing to the dryness. The baby lotion that we were using has been fine, but it left his skin (and our hands) a little sticky after using it and I even noticed lint and fabric fibers from his pajamas sticking to his legs after the lotion has been applied. I tried the Honest Face + Body lotion on him after a bath and was pleased to find that it has a thin but not runny consistency, goes on quickly and easily, and doesn’t leave a sticky or greasy mess on his skin. I also tried the lotion on my own skin and loved that it gave me just enough moisture without making my skin feel icky.
Honest Multi-Surface Cleaner – I was soooooo excited about this cleaner. When I was pregnant with Jasper I started using a homemade cleaner using more natural ingredients to clean our shower, bathroom, and kitchen surfaces. Now that Jasper is here, getting housework done can be tricky when he’d rather mommy hold him than do boring things like clean a bathroom. Using cleaners that aren’t harmful or toxic for him to be around is even more important now that I find myself needing to complete a few chores while he’s strapped to me in his sling. I gave the Honest Multi-Surface Cleaner a test run by using it to clean my bathroom counters, sinks, and fixtures, and let me tell you, I am in love!! The white grapefruit smell is absolutely divine. There is absolutely nothing noxious, unpleasant, or chemical-y about the fragrance of this cleaner. It smells like I’m cleaning my house with my favorite body spray, which is pretty awesome. I found that it easily removed soap, makeup, and hairspray build-up from the counters and fixtures and I was happy with the final results. I’d even go as far as saying that this was my favorite of the Honest products I tried.
I received a full-size bottle of the Honest Shampoo + Body Wash as well as the travel version that came in the sampler. The packaging tells me that it is natural, hypoallergenic, and tear-free. It’s available in one fragance – sweet orange vanilla.
When I squeezed a bit of the Honest Shampoo Body Wash into my hands and worked up a lather I noticed the amazing smell. More orange than vanilla, and more fresh-squeezed citrus than that sugary fake-orange smell that you find in things like sherbet and other orange-flavored sweets. It was such a pleasant aroma and I found myself purposely inhaling as I bathed Jasper so that I could keep smelling it!
I used this gel as both a body wash and as a shampoo to wash his hair, and at one point during his bath I accidentally tilted the water spray a little too far and sent a stream of soapy water down his forehead and into his eyes. I cringed and immediately started apologizing while bracing myself for tears. Instead, he looked up at me and grinned. So I thought that was pretty cool – the shampoo + body wash didn’t irritate his eyes any more than plain ole water.
Since I also had a travel size version that came in my sampler pack I put the smaller bottle in my shower and used it on myself. Loved it. This is a product that truly can effectively be used by everyone in the family. The citrus-y smell isn’t too “girly” and my husband even enjoys the fragrance!
All right, so now let’s talk about what is probably the most popular of the Honest products – their diapers. I’ll go ahead and comment on the most visible and obvious feature of these things… they’re so stinkin’ cute. They come in all different patterns for boys and girls and they even have seasonal and limited edition patterns for the holidays. I got a “boys’ discovery kit” sample pack of diapers that came with the 6 patterns shown above as well as 1 plain white diaper.
I know, I know, why should I care if a diaper is cute? After all, their purpose is to contain poop and pee… does that really need to make a fashion statement? Probably not, but I’m gonna go ahead and admit that I’m a sucker for any excuse to make something “cute” and I adore all of the fun prints available for these diapers.
Along with Honest diapers I also received a travel pack of their wipes. Compared to the wipes we normally use, these were thicker and sturdier. They are unscented, which I prefer, and didn’t leave any residue on Jasper’s skin. The wipes are super soft and just all-around feel like a quality product. My only minor gripe with these is that it’s difficult to remove the wipes from the travel packet one-handed. I haven’t tried the other sizes packs so I can’t speak to the packaging there, but it’s something to keep in mind if you order the travel size to keep in your diaper bag.
I wanted to really put these to the test so I used them as my overnight diapers over the course of several days, when Jasper is likely to go his longest stretch without a diaper change.
First of all, I gotta pause here and comment on how cute the blue gingham pattern is, don’t you agree? It was almost a shame to put his pajamas on and cover it up!
Okay, back to talking about the functionality. When it comes to checking whether or not a diaper needs changing, I’m a shameless Butt Sniffer. It’s something I do so automatically that I find myself lifting Jasper’s bum to my nose in polite company without batting an eye. So during one usual middle-of-the-night feeding I conducted my usual sniff test and didn’t smell anything. Huh, that was odd. It had been over 4 hours since his last change (right before being put to bed) so surely he needed a new diaper.
I changed him anyway and found that the diaper was indeed heavy with pee but had done a fantastic job of masking the smell. On other nights when he had a poopy diaper I noticed that I could smell that he needed a change when doing the sniff test, but the odor was much less obvious than the diapers we usually use.
The diaper itself is made of a comfortable material. On the company’s website it states that the diapers are plant-based and made from sustainable harvested pulp with no chlorine processing. There are also no additives such as fragrances, lotions, or latex. I’ve felt softer disposable diapers (though funny enough, those particular diapers also leaked like crazy!) but the Honest diapers did not cause any irritation to Jasper’s skin. I liked that the fasteners were nice and wide – some of the widest tabs I have seen – and allowed us to get a snug but comfortable fit.
Jasper did not leak out of any of the 7 diapers that we tried. I think these diapers are all around awesome. They’re comfortable for him, made from friendly materials, and they mask odor like nobody’s bidness. Oh, and they’re totally adorable… but I may have already mentioned that.
