OUR EXPERIENCE AT DEEP WELL FARM
We first stopped at the ticket booth to pick up our wristbands. Jasper was excited about the wagon of pumpkins and we hadn't even gone inside yet. He's loved pumpkins since before he could talk.
Where to start?
I wonder why this gal is named Ella?
First, we came upon these tire swings and rope climbing wall. We asked Jasper if he'd like to try, but he was too nervous.
But this slide was just right.
He went down it approximately 536 times.
Next to the slide was this little tire arena.
But the kids spotted a sandbox and it was all over.
I think we need a sandbox at home, to be honest.
We considered this hay maze a little warm-up for the corn maze that we'd be tackling later.
After some time in the sand, Jasper headed down the hill to the corn crib.
Shelby loved the texture of the corn kernels!
The shed roof provided some much-needed shade and allowed the kids to cool off for a few.
Wee!
There's lots of different slides for the kids to choose from. This one was neat because it had a tractor installed on one side of the decking, so before sliding the kids could sit in the driver seat and pretend to steer.
Jasper played on a larger playground structure that he called the "ossticle course". He was being very brave.
Meanwhile, Shelby climbed on some big ol' tractor tires.
After that, it was time to pick up some cold water from The Pumpkin Barn.
Too bad the weather wasn't cooperating and coordinating with the pretty fall decor! Go away, summer, we're done with you!
Inside there's a small selection of trinkets, and simple refreshments such as water, tea, hot dogs, popcorn, and bottled Coke products are available. Bojangles is available on-site on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Next, we coo'd over these adorable miniature horses!
Then, Shelby practiced her basketball skills.
Goats! I love goats. Do you love goats?
I asked Shelby what these were, and she responded with, "Is a cock-a-doo!" I was expecting her to say bock-bock, her usual word for chicken, so popping out with something brand new cracked me up.
Jasper stepped up his bravery game with trying this huge slide, which has a minimum age of 4 (he turns 4 in 2 weeks!) and requires climbing up a rock wall and going across a swinging bridge. An incredibly sweet farm employee encouraged Jasper and even went up right behind him to give him a little extra courage.
Swinging bridges typically scare him, so he scooted across on his bottom.
Ready to slide!
This growth chart is such a fantastic photo op.
"Look, mom, can I go play now?"
Another "humoring mom for a photo" moment.
Next we headed over to the hay ride, something Jasper was most excited about!
We arrived just in time to take the next ride, as it was already almost full! The canopy and breeze during the ride helped cool everyone down on the way to the pumpkins.
Jasper didn't need any extra instructions about what to do - he immediately began his search for the perfect pumpkin.
Shelby did a great job picking out this beauty.
This is the average size of the pumpkins included with the pumpkin patch ticket. I would describe them as a pie pumpkin.
Since Shelby is not quite 2, she didn't have a pumpkin included with her ticket, so we obviously let her pick out one of ours.
Time to head back!
While Daddy dropped off the pumpkins in our car, Jasper went back to sliding while Shelby gave the swings a try.
Shade time! There's lots of big trees on the property as well as a huge picnic pavilion with lots of tables, so though it was a blistering day, there was plenty of shade available for getting a break from the sun.
After snacking in the shade, the kids made a beeline back to the sandbox, so Matt and I challenged each other to a game of cornhole, corn toss, beanbag toss, or whatever you call it in your neck of the woods.
Matt won, but we agreed neither of us have a future in professional cornhole.
Next, it was time to tackle the corn maze.
The maze isn't just walking through some corn... we also had to solve a mystery! We were given a clue card and as we made our way through the maze, checkpoints would give us clues about the case and we would hole punch the appropriate images.
It was a bit of a task trying to keep up with these two and not let them get too many turns ahead of us. Make sure everyone in your party is wearing appropriate shoes and walks carefully, as small vines or shrubbery sometimes covers the path.
Each checkpoint also gives you a hint at your progress through the maze.
Our little investigators. It was, unfortunately, just too hot to complete the entire investigation, so once we'd all had our fill we bailed out early. If you visit the farm and DO solve the case, however, you can take your completed card back to the ticket shed to claim a prize.
After the maze it was time for another shade break in the picnic pavilion while the kids played a little disc golf right next to us.
And by played disc golf, I mean they messed around with frisbees and the baskets for a few minutes. Matt and I tried it, too, but it was way harder than I thought! I'd be really good at it if the goal was to land the disc about 8 feet to the side of the basket.
Jasper had been eyeing this mega potato sack slide all day, and it shocked us both when he marched over there on his own saying, "I WANT to do that slide!"
... and he did it! About 10 times, he did it.
As soon as he reached the bottom he started hauling his sack back up to the top for another go. I'm still shocked this slide didn't scare him. The first part is quite steep to help the sack pick up speed, and you go shooting down the hill really fast!
Shelby did it, too! A couple of times on daddy's lap.
Once by herself, because she's a little daredevil and not much scares her.
And once on Mommy's lap!
Now that I've made you dizzy with all the gifs, head on over to Deep Well Farm's website and see if it sounds like a good place for your family to spend a fall afternoon. Maybe we'll start seeing some consistently cooler temps very soon and it'll feel AND look like fall when having fun outdoors!
We were provided admission to the farm for the purposes of this feature.
