If you love coffee and subscription boxes, then you'll want to know about this company I just discovered - Driftaway Coffee.
Coffee is somewhat of an obsession of mine, especially good coffee, and being able to have good coffee at home... well, that's gonna start by finding the Best coffee clubs of 2022 and some quality beans that get into my grinder as soon after roasting as possible.
Driftaway Coffee is a small batch coffee roaster based in Brooklyn. Every bag of coffee contributes to sustainable livelihoods for farmers by donating to the World Coffee Research. The coffee beans in each Driftaway box are roasted within 6 hours of being shipped, and that's a level of freshness you can definitely taste, as this is some of the best bitter coffee we have ever prepared at home.
Oh, and look... along with the roasting date, each bag has my name on it, which means it is mine and I don't have to share my coffee with my husband.
HOW DRIFTAWAY COFFEE SUBSCRIPTIONS WORK
When you sign up for a new subscription plan, your first box will be the one you see above - a tasting kit that contains a coffee sample from each of Driftaway's four flavor profiles: Fruity, Classic, Bold, and Balanced. After trying the coffee, you log in to your account using the Driftaway app or the website and personalize your future shipments based on the flavors you liked the most. Driftaway roasts a new coffee for each of the flavor profiles per month, so you're able to stay within your preferred style while also trying new beans.
HOW MUCH DOES A DRIFTAWAY SUBSCRIPTION BOX COST?
When you first sign up, the tasting kit is $16.00 with free shipping. After sampling the coffees in the kit and entering your preferences, you'll choose between an 11oz or 16oz bag of coffee for future deliveries. The 11oz bags are $16.00 each and there is a 2 lb plan for $34 or $17 per pound. Or there is a 16oz option for $22.
You can choose to have a cold brew coffee beans delivered weekly, every 2 weeks, or once per month. To save money, you can opt to pay once every 6 months (instead of per shipment) for an overall savings of $22-32.
The sampler pack contained one 2oz bag of coffee for each flavor profile: Fruity, Classic, Balanced, and Bold. Each package contains enough whole beans to brew one large pot of coffee per bag. You will need a coffee grinder (here's the one I use and love) to prepare the coffee at home. Driftaway has an educational "Coffeecademy" blog with excellent articles about learning how to brew the best coffee at home - check it out!
There's a postcard in the box with information about each coffee, including its origins and the story of the farmers that grow the beans.
These are the coffees that I received in my tasting kit. I wasn't sure about that fruity one with the Earl Gray tasting notes, but I ended up enjoying it! I could taste the Earl Gray but in a very subtle and nice way. It's not a coffee that I would have chosen for myself if I was looking for something new, and that's one of the perks (haha... oops) of this subscription box - you may end up discovering new favorites. This single origin coffee subscription is also worth trying if you want to try coffee from different countries.
I'm no professional coffee connoisseur, but I know what I like and I know what tastes appealing to me. I loved this coffee. Once we tried the first bag we got excited for each of the following three mornings to try the next flavor.
Matt and I typically enjoy dark roast coffees and so it was no surprise that our favorite profile was Bold. The coffee in our tasting kit for that profile was from Honduras with flavor notes of dark chocolate, almond, and cocoa. I was sad when we finished the pot. I want more. A lot more.
Though we had a clear favorite, all of the coffees were incredibly delicious. I appreciated that each one actually tasted like the flavor notes printed on the package. It was fun to sip slowly and let my brain register all the nuances in the taste and pick out all of the subtle flavors mingling around in the cup.
Basically, if you like good coffee, subscription boxes, and trying new things, then you'll dig Driftaway Coffee. Keep it in mind for a holiday gift idea, because tailored subscription boxes make great presents! And it's the gift that keeps on giving...
This is not a sponsored post, though we were gifted a tasting kit from Driftaway to give their coffee a try. We never promise a fully positive review, however, so if we don't like something, we will tell you!
