Looking for a fun fall treat that’s as easy to make as it is to devour? This fall puppy chow is the perfect sweet snack. With a dash of pumpkin pie spice and a handful of your favorite fall candies, it takes classic puppy chow to a whole new level of seasonal deliciousness.

Puppy chow, or muddy buddies, is a simple and sweet snack made with Chex cereal coated with melted chocolate, peanut butter, and butter, then dusted with powdered sugar. The result is a crunchy, chocolatey treat that's perfect for sharing.

People love adding variations to the classic puppy chow because it's versatile and easy to customize for any time of year. This one? Perfect for getting into the fall spirit.

    Ingredients

Here's everything you need to make your own:

all of the ingredients for fall puppy chow laid out in prep bowls on a counter.
    • Rice Chex cereal
    • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • Natural peanut butter (no-stir)
    • Vanilla extract
    • Powdered sugar
    • Pumpkin pie spice
    • Butter
    • Autumn Leaves and Pumpkin Mellowcremes (or similar harvest mix)

See recipe card for the full info and quanities.

    Instructions

Now that you have gathered all of your ingredients, here's what you do to bring everything together.

    melted chocolate with peanut butter.
    1. Step 1: In a saucepan on medium-low heat, melt butter and then add chocolate chips, peanut butter, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spice. Stir until melted and combined.
rice chex cereal coated with melted muddy buddy mixture.
    1. Step 2: Pour melted mixture over Rice chex and carefully fold it in until the cereal is nice and coated.
powdered sugar dumped onto chocolate coated cereal.
    1. Step 3: Add powdered sugar in 3 batches, shaking the bowl or using a non-stick spatula (or our hands!) to gently get the cereal coated.

    1. Step 4: Add fall candies, shake to combine, and you're done!

Hint: You can also shake the powdered sugar onto the cereal by putting everything into a large Ziploc bag, but I discovered that this method is very messy and usually requires working in several batches to get it all done. Do what works for you!

    Substitutions

This recipe is fun to play around with. Here are some ideas:

    • Chocolate chips - use semi-sweet, milk, or dark chocolate chips.
    • Nut butter - use peanut, almond, or cashew butter to alter the flavor.
    • Candies - I used Mellowcreme candies in fun autumn shapes (and flavors) but you can also use harvest M&Ms, peanut butter M&Ms, candy corn, or anything else you want.
    • Pumpkin Pie Spice - you can leave out the pumpkin pie spice or just use ground cinnamon in its place.

    Storage

Store your fall puppy chow in an airtight container. It'll stay good for several days, up to a week even, if it lasts that long.

You can also freeze this recipe in large freezer-safe zip top bags.

    FAQ

Are Muddy Buddies the same as Puppy Chow?

Yes, they are one and the same, and you can use the names interchangeably.

Is Puppy Chow a Midwest thing?

This snack is enjoyed across the United States, though it's particularly popular in the midwestern states.

Where did the name come from?

Chex cereal, used in puppy chow recipes, was originally made by the Purina company that makes... puppy chow! (and "cat chow" etc...)

This fall puppy chow gets a seasonal upgrade with a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice and festive fall candies.

    • Total Time: 15 minutes
    • Yield: 20 servings 1x

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 8 cups Rice Chex cereal
    • ¼ cup (half stick) unsalted butter
    • ½ cup no-stir natural peanut butter
    • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    • ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
    • 2 cups powdered sugar
    • Autumn Leaves and Pumpkin Mellowcremes (I used about 2 cups)
    • Additional fall-themed M&Ms, if desired.

    Instructions

    1. In a saucepan over medium-low heat, melt butter. Add chocolate chips and stir until melted. Add peanut butter, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract. Stir until combined and remove from heat. Let cool 5 minutes.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, add Rice Chex cereal. Add chocolate mixture and fold gently until coated, being careful not to crush the cereal.
    3. Add powdered sugar in 3 additions, shaking the bowl to flip the cereal around, until coated (you can also shake cereal and sugar in a large zip top bag)
    4. Add candies and fold to combine.
