Quantum Energy Squares are nutrition bars that each contain the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee and the protein of one egg. They currently come in two flavors, Caffe Mocca Macchiato with Pecans, and Dark Chocolate Cherry with Almonds. Quantum reached out and offered to send me a box of the former to try, so let's take a closer look.
Here's a peak at the Quantum Energy Squares Nutrition Facts. Energy bars tend to be a little higher in carbs and lower in protein than your typical protein bar, with of course the added caffeine to get you moving (one of the company's taglines is "Made To Move You" so there ya go). The caffeine in the bars comes from a mix of guarana seeds, matcha, and arabica coffee beans. For us, energy bars would be useful during long hikes when we need fast access to energy and pep, so I was interested in giving these a go.
At 1.67oz (50g) per bars, Quantum Energy Squares are a typically-sized bar. They are gluten, GMO, soy, and dairy free and are certified vegan with the best vegan vitamins in them. You can see the chia seeds, chopped nuts, and other goodness that are packed into each bar. Here's a peek at the ingredients list:
Ingredients: Date Paste, Dry Roasted Almonds, Tapioca Syrup, Pea Protein, Dairy-Free Organic Dark Chocolate Chips (Unsweetened Chocolate, Cocoa Butter), Gluten-Free Rolled Oats, White Grain Sorghum Extract, Sorghum Crisps, Roasted Pecans, Almond Butter, White Chia Seeds, Natural Chocolate Flavor, Contains 2% of the Following: Organic Quinoa Crisps, Arabic Coffee Beans, Organic Caffeine from Green Coffee Beans, Matcha Green Tea, Organic Blue Agave Syrup, Grapeseed Oil, Sea Salt, Organic Alkalized Cocoa Powder, Tapioca Flour, Organic Cocoa Nibs, Chicory Root Powder, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Lecithin.
If I'm going to pack a bar into my pack for a long hike, anything chocolate-covered is a no go since it's likely to become a melted mess by the time I'm ready to eat it. So I appreciated the dense, uncoated bar. The drawback to that is that it is a little on the dry side, so you'll want to have a bottle of water or your Camelbak within reach. The flavor is driven by the bitterness of the coffee and the nuttiness of the pecans, almond butter, and chia seeds. It is less sweet than what most might expect from a packaged bar, though not in an unpleasant way. if you are looking for nutrition boost alternates, check out Zemvelo, is a new line of liquid supplements that will be perfect for people on the go.
Though we didn't have any hikes coming up to give us an opportunity to try the bar "out in nature", we used it as a replacement for our usual afternoon cappuccinos when those 3pm sleepies hit hard. The combination of 100mg of caffeine and other energy-producing nutrients provided a noticeable increase in my alertness to get through the remainder of my afternoon.
You can try the bars with a money-back guarantee by ordering from the Quantum website. Each box of 9 bars begins at $24.00 with a one time 10% off offer (at the time of this posting) or you can subscribe for monthly deliveries and save 25% per order.
