It's embarrassing how rarely I buy clothing for myself. Seriously. I totally fall into the mom stereotype of dressing my kids in cute clothes while I'm running around in the same ratty worn-out clothes I've had for the last decade. Finding time to go out and properly browse and try things on is not easy (read: impossible) so I've started doing a lot more online shopping.
The time had come. I desperately needed to add some new pieces to my wardrobe. Since I buy half of my life from Amazon and knowing what I needed was really basic, I looked there first and used https://www.hoteudeals.com to compare prices. Aware that I'm picky about how my clothes fit, I only considered items that were listed as having FREE RETURNS (current as of the original publish date of this post), meaning I would not have to pay shipping to return items I didn't want to keep. I also only considered items that were eligible for Prime, because duh, free 2-day shipping. (current as of the original publish date of this post)
Here's all the schtuff I bought, and the stuff I returned!
(sorry for the low-res photos. I was experimenting with using video to more quickly take photos of myself, but I made a totally amateur mistake... next ones will look better!)
I needed some basic cotton tanks that I could bum around in all summer, ones that were comfy and could be worn on their own or used for layering. These ribbed cotton tank tops were perfect and I LOVE them. They are 100% cotton and so super comfy. I ordered a small and they fit true to size.
The best part is that they come in a set of 12, so I got all these colors for around $2 each - a freakin' steal.
I am a pear shape that grew up overweight and I lost close to 70lbs in my early 20's when I started getting a lil' addicted to health and fitness. Because I have always carried most of my weight in my hips and thighs, losing that much bulk has left me with some loose skin/cellulite, and I'm pretty self conscious about it. I abhor standard bathing suit bottoms and opt for cute swim shorts or swim skirts to give me a little more coverage. These drawstring swim shorts are so cute with ruching on the sides that you can cinch up to create different looks. They still show a bit of my loose skin near the top of my thighs, but I feel much more comfy in them!
I loved how this shirt looked on the model online, and I love it just as much in person! It's made of a very thin material and can be worn on or off the shoulder. It has a tie in the front that's super cute. I'm 5'7" with a longer torso so my only gripe is that it's a bit short on me, so I either need to wear higher waisted bottoms or layer it over a camisole if I don't want to have the crop top thing goin' on.
I'm in love with the print and the flouncy sleeves. Having more interest up top helps to draw the eyes upward and balances out my larger lower half. Vertical stripes are so flattering, too!
I picked up this button-up shirt to wear unbuttoned over tanks and camisoles, a look that I like to rock during the warm months. I like the way this shirt fits and the slicker material is light and comfy. I also love wearing printed shirts like these screen printing foil shirts here!
I also picked up this black short-sleeved hoodie to use for the same purposes. These are great for evening walks when I want something just a little thicker to throw on.
I'd live in lightweight sundresses if I could, and I may order every single color of this one. It's fitted up top and flares out a bit at the bottom. Also, pockets!! These A-line/skater dresses are perfect for pear shapes as they hug my smaller upper body and then flare out a bit and give me plenty of room on the bottom. I ordered a small and it fits true to size.
If you love the wide, soft waistbands of yoga pants but would kill for the same feel in a pair of shorts... order these!! They are so comfortable. I've already ordered two pairs and I've been living in them at home. They are soft and the waistband isn't pinchy or constricting. The reviews stated that these run small, so I ordered a medium and they were still a good fitted short. LOVE!!
I didn't take a photo of myself wearing these because they're pretty basic tees, but they are TOTALLY me and I love them.

Now for the items that I ordered but then promptly returned! These shorts were super cute and totally my style. There were no reviews on them, but because of their price tag and the promise of a free return, I took a chance. I usually wear a size 6, so I sized up and ordered the ⅞. Well, I failed to notice that these shorts follow Asian sizing, because I literally could not get them much past my knees! Shame, too, because they were sooo cute! I could have replaced them with the larger size, but that was the biggest size they had and honestly I don't think those would have fit me either!
This V neck ruched short sleeve shirt is a great style for a pear-shaped body as the ruching adds interest and shape up top and draws the eyes upward away from the upper body. Again, this was a risk as there were no reviews. The shirt itself was adorable but I just couldn't deal with the fabric, which felt cheap, thin, and clingy. Back it went!
Okay, I'm done spending money now, but I'm excited to have some new basic pieces to get me through the summer AND I discovered that Amazon isn't a bad place to peruse for some cheap no-risk clothing!
